Social media use among Thais and mental health problems

From collecting opinions on social media, it was found that the majority of people, 61%, use social media as a place to post their feelings and express themselves, followed by 22% to share and exchange experiences about their own and others’ mental health problems. It was found that people close to people with mental illnesses. Such as depression are often negatively affected by their mental health as well.

The next 11% found that it was information and advice. Which was sharing useful information and methods for taking care of good mental health, and 6% was encouragement. Where social media users expressed their concern and encouragement to those who were facing mental health problems.

External factors affecting mental health


External factors
  are external environments that affect mental states without the individual’s direct control. It was found that:

30% of work-related problems  are due to working with diverse people and a lack of work-life balance. At the same time, we found that most people tend to prioritize mental health, with some social media users choosing to leave a job that is detrimental to their mental health rather than enduring an unsuitable work environment. It was also found that those who have negative experiences from encountering hard-selling salespeople, such as selling insurance or selling beauty courses. Which create stress and discomfort for consumers. Which may lead to accumulated mental health problems.

7% quality of life and economic problems   , such as rising cost of living

1% of  people fall victim to scams,  such as being impersonated by scammers and causing financial damage.

Internal factors affecting mental health

Internal factors  come from the basic mental, physical, and emotional states of the individual, which affect the mental health of the individual. They can be summarized as follows:

  • Physical health problems  42%  Physical condition is a factor affecting mental state.
  • Self -Esteem 28%  How you feel about yourself affects your mental health.
  • 23% Self-expectations,   such as test score expectations or the need for perfection in work.
  • Experiences and Background  7%  Personal background and childhood trauma have a long-term impact on mental health.

4. Venting feelings (9%) Talking, expressing your feelings. Whether it’s writing them down on paper or talking to friends or family members.

5. Changing the environment (8%) such as moving to live alone, changing workplace, traveling, going on trips, etc.

6. Pet Therapy (4%) Using pets to help heal or restore the mind.
